Lesson Objectives
- differentiate between storage medium and device
- compare the types of secondary storage media with respect to portability, speed and capacity, method of access
- use terms associated with storage devices;
- label the parts of a disk with 100% accuracy
- describe the medium used to enable communication between the hard drive and the CPU.
- calculate the storage capacity of a disks based on given architectural properties.
Computer Memory
Computer memory is any physical device capable of storing information temporarily or permanently. Devices that store data temporarily are categorized as Primary Storage Media while devices that store data permanently are called Secondary Storage Media.
Although ROM stores data permanently, it is not categorized as secondary storage media. This is so because ROM is one of the main memory that the CPU accesses before accessing a secondary storage device.

Answer the following questions
- A __________________ is used to store instructions how to load basic computer hardware to start the computer.
- A __________________ is used to store data for a short while so that the data can be accessed by the ____________________.
- _______ loses its contents when the computer is turned off. This means it is ______________ and _______ retains the data stored in it even when the computer is off. This means that it is _______________________
- What does each abbreviation stand for: SRAM, DDRAM, DRAM,EPROM, EEPROM?
- What is the main difference between an EPROM and EEPROM?
Units of Computer Storage
Question: Aarrange each unit of storage in ascending order based on their capacity.
Megagbyte, Terabyte, Gigabyte, Byte, Bits, Kilobyte

Secondary Storage
- Why do you need secondary storage?
- Why do use a flash drive to store your SBA files rather than on a DVD?
List all secondary storage media and group them in their respective categories.
Often times, you will hear the terms Storage Media and Storage Device. Is there a difference? Explain your answer.
Often times, you will hear the terms Storage Media and Storage Device. Is there a difference? Explain your answer.
You should be able o make wise choices when purchasing a secondary storage medium. Therefore by making comparisons between the media, you should be able to make a wise choice.
Research
1. Copy and complete the table, columns 2 to 3, below to compare each secondary storage based on the criteria. One is done for you.
2. Find the mean of the terms: Read/write head, sectors, tracks, buffers, cylinders, access time, sequential access, direct access
3. The CPU needs to communicate with all storage devices that is apart of the computer system in order for data to be stored after
processing. What makes it possible for the CPU to communicate with the hardware?

Let us take a closer look at the Hard Drive
The Hard Disk
The hard disk is a spindle of magnetic disks, called platters, that record and store information. The hard drive is made up of several hard disks called a disk pack. A platter is divided into different parts. Can you label the different parts.
Label the parts A -D of the disk platter image below
Question: How does a manufacturer determine the size of the hard disk drive?
Exercise [Due Thursday, Jan 25, 2018]. Complete in notebook.
Seagates Technology is a company that manufactures hard drives. One particular hard drive manufactured has 12 disk platters in one pack. Each platter has 800 tracks with each track holding 9500 bytes.
A) How many many bytes are stored on one platter?
B) Determine the maximum storage capacity of this hard disk drive.
